We voted early last week because we’re out of town this week. In our little county of 35,000 the voting total was already over 5,000 when I ran my ballot through.

I hope you do. People underestimate the importance of local offices. Mark Meadows was a county commissioner in our county. He was a total jerk who pissed a lot of people off. When he ran for Congress, I thought “that can’t be the Mark Meadows that was commissioner here”…yep, it was, despite leaving a trail of enemies. The entire political process is that of climbing a ladder. Anyway, we’ve paid attention to the local races more than the national for 30+ years that we’ve lived here. This stuff matters.

I’m amazed that he won, where he did. If you’re not familiar with Detroit Metro Area, it’s a pretty interesting ethnic-stew, with lots of Asian/Indian/Hispanic flavor coming in and creating their own versions of the American Dream. Remember that old saw? You worked your ass off at your job, supported your family, and educated your offspring so they could rise up and live an awesome, high-tech, high-calorie, less-dysentery lifestyle. The district James won is very white, very working-class, very conservative-leaning. He’s the first black Rep to win in this area, re-drawn as it was. Conservative whites somehow got past their Hitlerian-racism to elect a black man. It goes against everything we’ve been taught. 😆
