This is so good. Boomer-kids, whose Dads served in WWII, or Korea, this is required viewing. My older brother sent this to the family thread – he’s nine years older than me, and got drafted for Vietnam the month after he dropped out of college, in ’69. He got lucky, and ended up as a dental-assistant in Georgia, with weekends off to go fishing and sailing in the ocean. Half of his boot-camp class went straight to the jungle. To this day, he has no idea why he got the “free pass.” It’s not like we had connections. His friend from down the street went to ‘Nam, and came home after a couple months with his arm shot half-off. I went to visit him with my brother, and he was totally buzzed on weed and whatever. Laughing the whole time. I remember him saying to me, “Don’t sign up for the Army, whatever you do.” When I graduated from high school in ’77, it would have been the best time to enlist, and I could have used the discipline. There was no way!

Free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion are all despised by an enormous segment of our nation. It’s no longer a difference of opinion of how to exercise those freedoms, it’s whether or not those freedoms have any validity or relevance, and far too many hold those ideals in contempt.
The frustrating part for many of us is that we remember. It’s like we’re on a ship that has sailed and we can’t go back. We can still see, hear, and smell what America used to be, but the ship is far enough from the dock that we can’t make the jump back to what we were. It’s not that we want to roll back time to 1953 or 1970, but that we want to restore the foundations that made our nation great. Freedom to live our lives according to our values. Responsibility for our actions. Duty to our fellow man. Respect for those who differ from us.
